OK we will set it in stone tomorrow. Anyone that does not want to do Long Beach speak up. How far out can we get the surf report??? Any ideas of different things to do??? I would like to bring a few of those waterproof disposable cameras so we can get some shots out ther on teh big waves,,, the second set. You just can't get shots of that action from the beach and that is where we catch the big air. Today was so nice,,, I wish I was out launching off some 20 footers. Oh ya, I found the problem with the blaster,,, the internal fuel filter was all gooed up. It will be ready to rock!

Whos interested in this idea? We might want to make the reservation ASAP if we want to do this. Let me know

We were planning on being over there for that weekend already. Already have a place to stay in LB. There are fireworks on the beach boardwalk on Friday night or maybe Saturday night. Pretty sure its Friday night.
So you can count us in. Might have foot holds done by then. Let me talk to some of the frozen nutts from Spokane to see if they are down for a freeride. 38th street beach access?
Sounds like a few people so far. I was thinking of bringing the big boat and getting a waterproof video box and maybe filming the back side of the adventure. Catching the big air from sea? Hopefully it will be nice 60 second break, with no second set of waves, just nice rollers. That would be sweet, seen a few times in long beach like that so it is possible. Hopefully no storm surge or anything like that.
Jetgirl if you are looking I am sure there are people who will be wanting a place to stay.

Ok, we are scheduled and ready, heading over Friday early AM to long beach, Joe, we are bringing Alie so Austin has someone about his age. So 38th street beach access or further up the penisula? smaller waves up towards the tip, but still fun riding, less rip tides (no river pull).
But it is much better waves typically at 38th street. And easy to find.
So hope to see everyone again, I am down with monthly trip to the beach. Actually planning on 2 trips each month in Feb, march, april, or at least to hood river and hope for wind. I am in the process of finishing some projects then the SJ gets a make over so hopefully its done for this ride.
Joe, got any billet couplers laying around?
Let me know,
thanks

So where is everyone staying? maybe if i actually read this thread back in the day i could have said tierra del mar is supposed to be the shiznit that time of year but long beach is killer too and definitely one of my favorite places to ride. I will most likely be towing this house-sized POS behind my big truck if we have a campground or somewhere to shower and i can just sleep in the trailer.

Joe,
I was looking at billet coupler, is the one from Ebay billet? It looked like a stock set.
We are coming in as of right now, Friday AM. Planning on 10 or 11 am. But might come after work on Thursday but then we get in about 1 am and that makes for a hard day riding the next day. So probably just stick with Friday arrival.
Ryell,
There are camp grounds open in long beach that are fairly cheap.
I am not sure about parking next to the road on 38th street access road and just camping there. I know they don't like it on the beach, but maybe just park by the bathrooms. If you want you can come shower at our room, we are staying at Breaker's.

Also everyone is invited to Turkey dinner Saturday night after riding. Anybody interested??

Friday night they are doing the fireworks over the beach show. We are planning on being down on the boardwalk or at least somewhere close to there for most of the night. Basically come into Long Beach, turn left at the go kart track follow to the end, (boardwalk starts there).

Jetgirl,
there is a best western pretty close to the 38th street beach access.
It has beach access on that rode the best western is on, but that is the start of the boardwalk and pretty soft sand.
Any hotel on the penisula is close, we stay at the breaker's cheap during the winter's but since its New Year's its summer rates at most places. But a regular room there is still cheap.
Anyways, for lodging, Go to www.funbeach.com
Again everyone is invited to Turkey dinner on Saturday night after riding.

Not sure about the rest of Wa.
But in Spokane they are illegal year around, and only legal in a little city outside of Spokane only on the 4th of July and on the indian Resv.
I see people at long beach letting off Fireworks. I think the sign says no fireworks, since the dune grass is very flammable when it's dry. (summer time) I have been knowen to break the law a few times in the past, just word of caution, be safe..... Cop's are watching.

Either way if you choose to bring them or lite them off it's your choice and your ticket if you get caught.

TexasRex

WA st legislature leaves it up to the districts to decide whether or not they will allow fireworks. Fire works are legal where I live, the city next to me, its seems like everyother year they are allowed. The next city they dont allow arial fireworks (morters, bottle rockets and fountains!). So you should contact the city if you really care. The worst they will do is just take your fireworks, specially this time of the year cause there really isnt no immonent threat of fire.

Since CPRman shared the salt water fact I thought people might find this link interesting:
http://www.wunderground.com/MAR/buoy/46041.html

It's current data from a buoy 25 miles miles off the Washington coast near Aberdeen. There is detailed Water/air temps and wave and wind information.

Might not tell you what the beach is like but if the waves are huge out there they have to hit sometime. :)

Thanks,

dsolie
12-09-2004, 11:31 PM
Currently with a wave height of 14.11 feet and a wave range of 14.1 feet, that gives you a linear wave angle of 63 degrees!!!! Dang!! Thats a steep pitch!!

rasper99
12-10-2004, 12:25 AM
CPRman is getting a bit excited about the big waves. Please consider these large swells are TWENTY FIVE miles out. How big is your gas tank?

As the swells hit the shallow waters near the shore they would get smaller. There probably is some correlation between the waves out 25 miles and the shore waves. In the end the energy does have to go somewhere.

Another way to guess what is going on now is comparing the data from the last freeride (look at the monthly graphs):
http://www.wunderground.com/MAR/buoy/2004/11/13/46041.html?graphtype=1

With the current data:
http://www.wunderground.com/MAR/buoy/2004/12/9/46041.html?graphtype=1

Consider how the surf was for the last freeride and what the ocean data was. The ocean has been kicky some booty the last couple days. Might just be some fun at the beach.

In case anybody wants to make up for screwing off in science class long ago...
Here is another link to the same buoy at the official goverment site:
http://www.ndbc.noaa.gov/station_page.php?station=46041

Here are definitions of the terms:
http://www.ndbc.noaa.gov/waveobs.shtml

Dannyboy,
Everyone is welcome, like you probably already can see. Just a bunch of NW people that love to ride, being safer than riding alone on the ocean. Come out Friday night for the fireworks on the beach, should be good group of people that night. Then Saturday riding, afterwards Turkey dinner (free) to anyone that wants to come, being held at The breakers hotel in our room, will let you know the room number Friday night and Saturday night. Anyone heading home Saturday night that wants to shower off before they leave, are welcome to use our shower and are welcome to come by for food.
Again, Turkey dinner, mash potatoes, gravy, cranberry sauce, corn, stuffing. all provided. Anything else you want, food or drink you must bring.
The Turkey dinner is open to anyone showing up, riders, family, etc.

I would like to, depends on what time we get out of the house Friday.
Planning on 7 am so could be over there around 1-2 pm.
So I might ride Friday if others are going to be there.
I am also planning on checking out race site for in the gorge for 2005 and so might be later. And then possibly stake out a place on the beach for fire/fireworks show/drink fest.

anyone drink bud light? If interested I will bring it for either Friday fireworks, or Saturday night turkey dinner.
Let me know.

Chris, great idea for the new ocean rider's, granted still learning to ride the stand-up in the white stuff my self, but have some great pointer's for runabout rider's and surf. specially about overturned boats, and wave curls. Would be nice to have a little share time with new rider's to let them know the deal with the sand bar, rip tides, safety issue's, etc.

I will be there Friday around noon. Are we meeting at the hotel or at 38th street beach access?

Jon,

I drink bud light, and you are my new best friend lol. Whevever we meet is fine. I am not familiar with the layout of longbeach, but will be at the hotel by noon (Silver Durango, double trailer, one ski). Is anybody who is coming early, bringing a beach cart??

Jon2771
12-28-2004, 10:55 AM
Dan,
I will bring it. I will be driving Brown dodge ram, two place trailer, stand-up and runabout, with numbers on R/A 505.
The layout of long beach is really easy. On the website for long beach you can look at a map that gives you the beach access sites, and street numbers. The breakers is north of downtown long beach, you will see a Chevron gas station after leaving town, on the right, the Breakers is left just little past chevron station. golf course is right across highway from breakers.
The 38th street beach access is the first beach access when you come in the town. before you reach downtown. If you go through Illwaco you will turn left just before the shell station. If you get to go-kart track you went to far.
My cell does not work once I leave Illwaco. So cannot get message's unless I drive to Illwaco. I will stop by the beach access first thing and check if anyone is riding.

SURF REPORT for Friday/Sat.
Still kind of early but figured I would check.
Looks like it will be the waves Jay is looking for. 4 to 5 foot wind waves, 3 to 4 ft. swell. Water temps 50-53 degree's. No tsunami like last time.....
I will check tide tables and see what the rip tide is doing but hopefully right now looks slow. So expect nice round face waves, swell of 4 ft means easily 12 foot back side. Good enough for back flip Joe. Or barrell roll on the blaster??
I will call in on Thursday and update surf report.

Looks like Travis, Nate, and Ben have all cancelled for this weekend. Guess I need new camera people... :(

I will be there with DV camcorder ready. Santa even brought me an nice external microphone that makes quite a difference. Who knows the next DVD might even be better than the new one.

Trip plans:
I will be heading down with my wife Saturday morning and hope to arrive around noon. We have reservations at the Breakers for Saturday night. We will be bringing around a gallon of homemade gumbo to add to the Saturday dinner festivities.

In regards to video:
Someone in this thread mentioned making copies of video tapes we shoot for Chris, etc. If you have a Digital video camcorder we can copy each other's tapes while we are there Saturday night and maybe even Sunday. Try to bring what you need to do this including a 4 to 4 firewire cable and your camera manual. You might even need your camera remote control like my Canon does.

So you can find the right instructions in your manual here are examples of the DV tape copying pages for my Canon:
http://home.comcast.net/~barryblanchard/stuff/Canon.jpg
and Sony:
http://home.comcast.net/~barryblanchard/stuff/Sony.jpg

If you have a non-DV camcorder bring your AV cables and we might be able to deal with copying that too. If someone has one of those inverters that make AC electricity in your car it could help recharging camcorder batteries.

I will only be shooting with my Canon. The Sony has a bad microphone but works fine for copying tapes.

Just make sure I have something good to shoot!

Thanks,
Barry B

Digital video camcorders are usually firewire only. Some might have USB for downloading stills like a digital still camera. USB is possible if you have a USB device to capture analog video.

I was thinking of borrowing a high-end Dell laptop from work that can do video work. After thinking about the time involved messing with video I figured I would just wait until I get home. That way I can use the time at the beach for things like socializing.

Joe, for the newspaper thing. I am coming, wife Vicki, above kids, and talked Steve Wareham into coming out, all from Spokane, Wa. Hauling his barge for him. And not sure of any other East side guys coming yet.

I have small power inverter 300 watt. Not sure if it works or not, usually our DV cam holds a charge all day. I do not have the cable for video cam to video cam but can play video on TV at the breakers Saturday night.
Might be able to rig something up, sounds like video will be plenty. Which is good.
See you guys tomorrow afternoon. Trying to leave early to make it there around noon.

Looks like good afternoon high tides :)
Also, sinse we do drive on the beach up here in Washington, and I often get asked about the rules and regulations, here are some tips. :)

When pulling onto the approach road you should decrease the air pressure in your tires to 20-25 pounds. When you lower the air pressure it gives the tire a wider, softer footprint enabling the vehicle to ride higher on top of the sand instead of digging down into it. This also helps to reduce the amount of strain on the engine since you're rolling on top of the sand and not plowing through it.

When driving through the softer sand between the approach road and the hard packed beach, do not stop. Drive at a slow, even pace. The maximum speed limit is 25 MPH. Accelerating too quickly will cause loss of traction and bury you to the axle. If this happens, it's time to break out the jack and shovel.

Try to stay in the ruts made by other vehicles unless they are so deep you bottom out. The sand in these ruts is more compacted than other sand.

Stay on the hard pack and out of the "sugar sand". This soft sand is the Peninsula's version of quick sand, and driving in it is a fair guarantee you will bury your car to the axel.

If you do get stuck beyond your ability to pull yourself out, expect tow fees to be approximately $80.

Stay out of the clam beds (the softer sand close to the water line). This preserves our clams and ensures more recreational dig dates available each year. (It also keeps you from getting a ticket!)

Watch the tides! Don't get trapped on the wrong side of areas of the beach that are impassable at high tide.

If you can do so without going into the sugar sand, park above the high tide line.

In the event that you do lose traction, DO NOT spin your wheels to try to dig out of it. It only takes a couple of pumps on the gas to sink you down to your axle. The best solution is to decrease your tire pressure, shift to low range and back out of the rut you came in on before trying to proceed.

Always watch for pedestrians, animals and sunbathers. And remember, beach debris cannot be trusted to stay put. Sneaker waves can lift perfectly stable looking logs and move them quite a distance in just a few moments.

Give the underside of your vehicle a good freshwater rinse when you come off the beach to remove corrosive sand and salt.

For all to keep updated. A lot of us arrived today, some a little later then others. We did not hit the beach today but we will tomorrow, rain or not! So far, I have met up with Joe, Jay, Dan, and Ryell. If anybody else is out here. I am in room 412 at the breakers. That's in Building "D". Ryell and I scoped out the beach today and it looks like the Cranberry street beach enterance is gonna be the SPOT!!! If not, we fall back to the 38th st enterance.

Anyhow, if others are down here or coming down, hurry up and hook up! Cell phone coverage is sketchy down here, so we are relying on text messages. If you know one of our numbers.. Use it!

C-ya (or a lot of you) tomorrow!!!

Dan

Okay guys, I have a day one update for you!!!!

New Years festivities included quite a bit of alcohol conditioning, and masses of consumed seafood (not a good mix). Fireworks were great and the weather cooperated. Now....

Surf Day - Saturday.
AM meeting at the edgewater inn for some breakfast and planning, most people came dressed ready to rock and roll... Others, like Joe, came in his own special attire (see next thread). We alll hit the beach at the 38th st access about 11:00ish... GAME ON!!! Once all arived, we all helped unloading boats and getting them ready to GO! Small pre-surf meeting, going over some safety basics and partner pairing, we hit the surf. Great breaks all along the beach, we had some great arial efforts made by all. Special mentions to:
Kim - For the massive air that we now have proof of her doing!!!!

Ryell - Jumped so hard he lost a shoe, smelled so bad, the surf brought it BACK!!!

Jay - For allowing the handlebars to give you the himelich manuver mid air

Clint - For just ripping it UP!

Joe - For the tent and the pleasure of doing the walk/swim of shame after our boats died 100yds from shore.

Dan and Kevin - First timers out in the surf hitting the big waves with the best of em

Dan C. - For letting us all use your (now broken) ski, and the use of your camera!!!

Scotty - For NEVER coming in to rest

Jon and the other dude in the red drysuit - For going big in the back breaks

Chris - Just for being there with the cameras and your sarcastic humor

All the rest of them, inlcuding the amazing hospitality of the wives, girlfriends and kids, made this an incredible event.

It's not over yet though. Round two is happening on Sunday, but Kevin and I had to go homeward today, so we will miss the action.

Don't fret though people, today we got some video footage and almost 500 pictures.. I am sure more will follow tomorrow.

Those who couldn't make it this round... You gotta get out here man!!! This was my first ski surfing, and I guarantee, it wont be my last!!

The un-edited un-adulterated versions of some of the human highlight pics are up temporarily here: temporary home (http://www.trippleateam.com/gallery/album52) I will rewatermark them in the very near future and get them moved to their permanent home, but I have an engine to get running first!
