If ye old ski needs a paint job, what kind of paint to use?

What will stick to fiberglass and take a beating?

Automotive paint, primer and clear is what you want to use but...
Surface prep is the key to a good paint job. You dont want to sand the whole thing down to the fiberglass cause most paint have a hard time sticking to it and you wount get a smooth looking job w/o 15,000,000 coats. What you really want to do is take your existing paint job/gell coat and scotch it so it is roughed everywhere you want to paint it. Run your hands over the ski to check for imperfections and fill where needed. Lay a good shot of primer and make sure it cures for 24 hrs in warm weather. Scotch it again. Then shoot the automotive paint, while its still tackey spay your clear. Keep spraying clear coats till about 3 or 4 but making sure the layer your spraying to has some tack but is not wet.
If you decide to take on this project... post some pictures!

And if you run into any questions, talk to your local auto painter or there is a paint forum here: http://www.paintucation.com/.

Well,
just to let you know I've painted a couple of my ski's and I have used PPG "Deltron, Like DBU 4982-K it's a bright Saphire Metallic, Tyhe only thing you have to remember is that Prep is the most important, using primer (which is usually Cheap). One other thing that I like is to mask off the area you want to paint, it looks better than layers over layers, just make sure that you apply the same amount of coats, especailly the wet coat. The little rise of the edges can be taken off by wet sanding along with any runs if you get any. Take your time and this won't happen, takes patience. You can also apply clear coat. When I bought my silver paint I also bought some blue metallic flake and it really looks good. I'm trying to post a pic even though the metallic doesn't show very well, but looks good in person.

hehehehe, wrong thread but... is that baby on the ski real? i mean is it a real picture? if so, man start em out young, thats the best way! rock on!

As for the paint, sand, sand and sand again... if ya dont think the surface is right, sand again... use 220-400 grit fine sand paper, get a nice smooth finish, as was stated before, any voids need to be filled... mask off your area that you want to paint, and use a "interlocking" sweeping motion while painting, meaining you wanna overlap about a 1/2-1" on all sides. use a steady motion, as you come into the area you want to paint, squeeze for paint, when your through with it keep your hand moving, and let off for paint... if ya dont give it the follow through, youll get a drip job. Use a good quailty paint, ie. PPG, HOK (House of Kolor), Dupont is ok, Stay away from 3m, they make good adhesives, but there auto paint SUCKS. If you are going to add another coat, do it while it is tacky, if you masked off area and doing a design on it, then just wait till its tacky, pull tape @ a 45 degree angle from your work to get a nice clean line, wait till its dry, sand with 440-600 grit fine, and do it LIGHTLY, wet sand preferably.. Mask off for the other colors, when your ready to shoot the clear, use 2-3 coats, or as many as you would like.. but remember, the thicker it is, the easier it is to show cracking. After the clear, wetsand with 1000 grit, buff it out, and then youll have a peice of glass that has been molded to look like a jetski and youll stand back and go, damn, i did that, now all the girlies will wanna ride heheheheheheheheheheh

Hope that helps ya bro
