pap0007 02-24-2008, 12:58 PM Hello All-
i have a 96 xp and i think the engine is seized. i have a new battery, a lot of new wiring, all fuel lines replaced, new wear ring, tach and vts work, hull is fine.
when i try to start it, there is a buzzing sound, like maybe the starter is working, possibly seized engine.
if anyone has any ideas, please let me know.
thanks in advance.

dsolie 02-25-2008, 12:29 AM Kevin,
First, you need to see if you can turn the motor over by hand! Pull off the PTO guard (the grey plastic thing on the back of the motor, over the driveshaft). Then pull the spark plugs out. Now, under that grey thing you removed, there is a white wheel connected to the motor, spin that (either way). does the motor spin 360 degrees easily?
pap0007 02-25-2008, 03:46 PM Thanks for the reply Dan.
I have looked behind the engine, that wheel will not turn. i have a known working model next to mine, the wheel on that one turns, mine does not.
It seems the engine may be seized...is there anything I can do from here? force it to turn over without opening the whole thing up, oil, pry bars?
If anyone knows of any good online resources for the following info, please let me know:
If I will need to open it up...im looking for tips on what to know before going ahead, tools, etc. I also need to change the wear ring on a seadoo next to it. Is that best left to the pros, or can someone with the knowledge of a car mechanic do these things?
Thanks very much for your help

dsolie 02-25-2008, 11:49 PM All hope is not yet lost Kevin.. Next step is to pull the pump off (good practice anyhow).. The pump could be frozen, hence the motor will not turn...
You REALLLY need to go buy a service manual, they are cheap on ebay. There is step by step instructions on how to pull the pump (even change a wear ring)..
But, as far as changing a wear ring, pull the pump and take off the steering and venturi assembly. Remove the prop (never fun), and throw the pump and wear ring in the freexer overnight.. The old wear ring will slide right out and you can slide a new one right in.. Reinstall everything, put oil in and and ride! Your first time starting the ski after a new wear ring is going to be VERY tight and not spin well.. Spray the crap ou of the inside of the pump with WD-40 right before you start the ski.. This will help the impeller "burn" into the wear ring, giving you the tightest clearances possible.
KgBsUcKa 02-26-2008, 12:41 AM Eh..correction...only throw the wear ring in the freezer :) Keep the pump in the warmer air. The idea is to shrink the ring so it will drop in easily. You will also want to replace the o-ring on the impeller cone and pressure testing is advisable.
You could always just switch the two pumps...that is if the other motor truly is seized.
dsolie 02-26-2008, 09:41 AM ehhh... correction to you! lol.. By freezing the pump, the old wear ring comes right out, just as easy as the new one slides in...
KgBsUcKa 02-26-2008, 12:20 PM Eh? Never heard of doin it that way!! Can people really fit an entire pump in the freezer?! Lol! I guess that would work...faster to just cut it out. Either way :)
pap0007 02-28-2008, 06:16 AM Thanks much for the suggestions guys, i will get back to you with any questions/news. Could be a while before a decision is made...
Thanks
